Liu Kuilan is Associate Professor of English and Director of the Chinese American Literature Research Center in the Department of English at Beijing Foreign Studies University. She received her Ph.D. in Asian American literature at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2002 and has been teaching English writing, reading, British and American short stories, Modern Bildungsroman, and Asian American literature to undergraduates and graduates since then. From September 2009 to July 2010, she conducted research as a Fulbright Program Advanced Scholar at the Department of Ethnic Studies in UC Berkeley and has interviewed 20 Asian American literary critics and writers. With research interests in American literature and Asian American literature, she has published in English and Chinese more than twenty articles about Chinese/Asian American literature in Mainland China and Hong Kong, the US, and Canada. She is the author of The Shifting Boundaries: Interviews of Asian American Writers and Critics(2012), the editor of Changing Boundaries and Reshaping Itineraries in Asian American Literary Studies (2014), and the first translator of William Poy Lee’s The Eighth Promise, and Lan Samantha Chang’s “Hunger.”
She has successfully hosted or worked as a coordinator to organize both international and national conferences on Asian American literature in Beijing in 2006, 2009, and 2012, co-sponsoring the conferences with St. Thomas University, Florida, Minzu University, and University of California, Berkeley.
Currently, she is expanding her research interest to include Chinese Canadian literature and overseas Chinese literature.
