报告摘要:

The inefficiency of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) prompted large-scale retrenchment during the 1990s. The displaced workers were middle aged, not well educated and had accumulated firm-specific human capital that was unlikely to be of value in the increasingly decentralized market due to the state sector’s inefficiency. The unemployment scars from such involuntary job loss may push displaced workers to seek self-employment. Using the Chinese Household Income Survey (CHIP) data in 2002, we find that the self-employed earned less than their counterpart workers, after both observed and unobserved characteristics of displaced workers are controlled, indicating that the entrepreneurship is necessity driven.
