报告题目: Utilizing triple oxygen isotope composition in atmospheric trace species for atmospheric chemistry and hydrology research

报告简介:Oxygen has three stable isotopes: 16O, 17O, and 18O. Normally the variations of the ratios of 17O/16O and 18O/16O follow a line of slope ~0.5. This relation does not hold all the time. For example, atmospheric ozone found more than 30 years ago is known to possess anomalous isotope ratios, following a slope unity. In the atmospheric, interaction of ozone with other molecules can transfer the anomalous isotope signature to other compounds such as sulfate, nitrate, and carbon dioxide. Consequently, atmospheric oxidation involving ozone can be probed, checked, and studied in great detail. Here, atmospheric nitrate, the end member of NOx oxidation, known to have a largest unusual oxygen isotopic composition next to ozone, will be focused and talked, along with other atmospheric applications utilizing oxygen isotope composition. Not limited to its usefulness in atmospheric oxidation, the triple oxygen isotope composition can also shed new light on various carbon and water cycles and tackle problems such as gross productivity and hydrology from a different angle. Attempts to utilize the signature for reconstructing past hydrological cycles will be made.

地点:暨南大学番禺校区学院楼会议室

主讲嘉宾:康代温

嘉宾简介:Daiwen Kang is a Physical Scientist at National Exposure Research Laboratory, US EPA. He graduated from the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, North Carolina State University with a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences. He works in air quality modeldevelopment, evaluations, and applications. He develops, updates, and evaluates the lightning NOX production schemes in EPAs Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. His current research interests are the impact of lightning NOX on air quality, trend analysis of lightning NOx to the total NOx budget in US.

Title:The Impact of Lightning-induced NOX on Air Quality

Abstract:Lightning-produced nitrogen oxides (NOX=NO+NO2) in the middle and upper troposphere play an essential role in the production of ozone (O3) and influence the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere. Despite much effort in both observing and modeling lightning NOX during the past decade, considerable uncertainties still exist with the quantification of lightning NOX production and distribution in the troposphere. It is even more challenging for regional chemistry and transport models to accurately parameterize lightning NOX production and distribution in time and space. With the availability of observed lightning strikes from the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), the raw NLDN lightning strike data are aggregated as hourly mean values and gridded into modeling domain for retrospective model applications. In this presentation, we will examine how the model performs with and without lightning NOx included in the model simulations. We also compare model predicated O3 fields with Lidar and surface observations.
