Abstract:Dr. Terry Shortall will first of all talks about text structure. A text is not simply a collection of sequenced paragraphs with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Instead, a text consists of hidden and sophisticated links that make important connections between the different ideas in a text, and another set of almost invisible links that join sentences and make them flow as a unit. And then he would next talk about word collocation, the way that words are attracted to each other, become friends, and stay together. Finally he will talk about culture control over word usage. The way we use our second language is heavily influenced by the culture and habits of our first language.
